23 PASA PASG – Wrap report
Canada earned its first ever Team medal Copper (4th), best ever 6 individual medals out of possible 8 divisions, and provisionally qualified the most surfers (8) to Santiago ’23 Pan American Games!
Canada scored a total of 10,978 points in the ranking thanks to the collective individual final results of 16 of its surfers, including the Gold Medal won by Finn Spencer in Men’s SUPsurf; Lina Augaitis (SUPrace), Liv Stokes (Longboard) and Cody Young (Shortboard) each winning Silver; Sanoa Olin (Shortboard) and Jeffrey Spencer (SUPsurf) earning Copper medals (4th).
Dom Domic, Executive Director of the Canadian Team, said: “We are very encouraged by these results and what this Team has accomplished, particularly in surpassing our targeted goals and provisionally qualifying 8 surfers to the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, Oct 20-Nov 5, which directly qualifies Shortboard surfers to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games”.
Congratulations to Team Brazil for taking out the Team Championships, with Argentina in second place with 11,540 points, third was Peru with 11,338 points and very close in fourth, Canada with 10,978 points.
The first individual final of the day was the Women’s Shortboard, where the winner was Silvana Lima from Brazil, facing Chelsea Tuach from Barbados, Lucia Indurain from Argentina and Sanoa Olin from Canada.
Olin was in first place in the heat during the first half, but Lima knew how to wait for the best waves and when they arrived, she took full advantage of them and with only two waves she was able to take the lead that she held until the end of the Final.
The Men’s Shortboard category was won by Kristian Kimmerson (BRA) in a final against Cody Young from Canada, Leandro Usuna from Argentina and Isauro Elizondo from Panama.
The Brazilian had a slow start to the Heat, in which he could not find the right waves, but the Canadian Cody Young knew how to take advantage of the conditions and took the lead in the first minutes, closely followed by Usuna and Elizondo.
In the last few minutes the Brazilian found the rhythm of Santa Catalina, posting high scores. By the final exchange of waves, Kimmerson (BRA) appeared to be in second place behind Young, but his last wave with just seconds remaining, was enough to pass Cody Young (CAN) by just 0.60 points.
