Collingwood SUP Race for the Eastern SUP National Team Selections
“As always, the 2025 edition of the Ontario SUP Series Sidelaunch in Collingwood, Ontario, did not disappoint. Saturday’s sprint and tech races were held under cloudless skies and searing heat. Being an ISA World Championships Qualifier race, an equally hot field turned out to do battle in Georgian Bay and the harbour. The event kicked off with the Technical Race, featuring a mix of in-harbour and open-water buoy courses. All race categories navigated a series of buoys inside the harbour, with Elite racers also completing three laps around a set of buoys outside the harbour—covering a total distance of approximately 6 km. Open competitors raced two laps within the harbour (approx. 5 km), while Novice racers completed a single in-harbour lap (approx. 2.5 km)
In the Elite Men’s 18–49 category, the top three finishers were Tim Oliver (ON), Tamas Buday (QC), and Cameron Carney (ON). For the Elite Women 18-49, it was Maddi Leblanc (ON), Ariel Amaral (ON), and Bara Skoumalova (ON) taking the podium. Among the 50+ Elite racers, Martin Rydlo (ON), Bruno Turcotte (QC), and Michael Taber (ON) led the Men’s category, while Edith Turcotte (QC), Wendy Tillet (QC), and Kirsty MacMillan (ON) were the top finishers for the Women. Prone Elite winners were Jojo Davidson on the women’s side and Gander Tawaststjerna for the men. Saturday afternoon saw the harbour inlet come alive with energy during the 100m Sprint races. Spectators lined the entire waterway, creating a thrilling atmosphere as athletes battled through heats, semifinals, and finals. Maddi Leblanc (ON) and Tamas Buday (QC) emerged as the Sprint Champions in the Women’s and Men’s categories, respectively.
For Sunday’s distance race, the big winds and famously tumultuous waters of Georgian Bay that often spin up a crazy downwinder stayed away and gave way to a 12-km out-and-back from Collingwood Harbour to the northwest around the Nottawasaga Island lighthouse. A noticeable west wind stretched things out early, giving favorite Tamas Buday (QC) a chance to power away from 18-year-old phenom Cam Carney (ON), who squeaked across the line just ahead of Women’s champion Maddi Leblanc (ON). Rounding out the top 3 in the 18-49 Men was Jeffrey Cowan (ON). On the women’s side, 50+ winner and second overall female, Edith Turcotte put more points on the board for Quebec, followed closely by Ariel Amaral (ON) as runner-up in 18-49 and Megan Sheppard (ON) taking 3rd. 50+ 2nd- and 3rd-place honors went to Wendy Tillett (QC) and Kristy MacMillan (ON), respectively. In the Men’s 50+, Martin Rydlo (ON) outpaced a tight draft duo comprising Bruno Turcotte (QC) and Tommy Lam (ON) for a clear win. A small prone field was led by Gander Tawastsjerna (ON) and Jojo Davidson (ON) on the women’s side. Sunday’s Open category SUP races were held inside the harbour breakwalls, but with no less challenging conditions via the multiple loops for the 9km parcours, with Michael Rutloff (ON), Artem Lavrynenko (ON) and James Pereira (ON) taking the top 3 steps of the podium.“
